From April 2018, Southern Discomfort Men’s Roller Derby are launching a new rookie program.
Our rookie program is for anyone who would like to learn to skate on quad roller skates, whatever your goals are – whether you want to play the game, become a referee or just looking to get fit and learn how to skate. The programme is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
What will I get out of the rookie program?
We’ll teach you all you need to know from basic skating to roller derby skills. This will cover:
- How to skate! Get started, stop, skate fast, jump, turn, everything you need 🙂
- An introduction to roller derby – how the game is played, the rules and basic tactics.
- Either (your choice):
- Skills you will need to be able to progress to skating with SDRD in our usual sessions, and become eligible to be rostered for a team, or
- Skills you will need to be able to on-skates officiate (referee) roller derby scrimmages, and the opportunity to practice those skills.
How do I sign up?
Submit your email address here and we will send you a message when we are ready to launch the new rookie program, letting you know what to do next!
I can’t wait till April! What can I do now?
If you already know how to skate you’re welcome to come along as a guest to our sessions on Tuesday nights in Tottenham or Saturday afternoons in Bridge Park, where we can assess you to see if you’re ready to jump straight into normal league training – complete this form and we’ll give you the details.
If you’re just starting out worry not, there are loads of people like you waiting impatiently to start rookie programs, who organise informal skate sessions at a variety of indoor and outdoor locations around the city, try these Facebook groups as a starter:
There are a number of other ways you can be involved in the league without skating, from becoming a non-skating official, helping record our sessions or volunteering at bouts. Drop us a message on our Facebook page and we’ll get you involved
